Kripke’s great achievement was to show that there are necessary a posteriori truths — propositions that are necessarily true but knowable only through experience. This broke the traditional assumption that necessity and a priority must coincide, and it revolutionized metaphysics.


IV. CANON IN MINIATURE: TWELVE KEY FIGURES

1. Parmenides — the shock of monism

Around 475 BCE, in a poem narrated by a goddess, Parmenides delivered the most radical claim in the history of philosophy: Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy change is impossible, plurality is an illusion, and reality is one, continuous, undifferentiated being. His argument is rigorous. You can think of “what is” or “what is not.” But “what is not” cannot be thought — to think of nothing is to think of something. Therefore only “what is” can be conceived. Change requires something to come from what-is-not or pass into what-is-not, which is inconceivable. Therefore change is impossible. This argument forced every subsequent philosopher to respond. Plato built his Theory of Forms partly to honor Parmenides’ insight (true reality must be unchanging) while saving appearances (the changing world we experience). 2. Plato — the world of Forms

Plato split reality into two levels. The Forms (or Ideas) are eternal, perfect, abstract objects — Beauty Itself, Justice Itself, the Form of the Good. Physical things are imperfect copies that participate in Forms: a beautiful painting is beautiful by virtue of its relation to the Form of Beauty. The Allegory of the Cave makes this vivid: prisoners chained in a cave see only shadows on a wall and mistake them for reality. One prisoner escapes, sees the fire casting the shadows, and eventually emerges into sunlight — the Form of the Good, the source of all intelligibility. Philosophy is the turning of the soul from shadows to reality.

Plato was honest enough to attack his own theory. In the dialogue Parmenides, the character of the young Socrates faces the Third Man Argument: if this red thing and the Form of Redness are both “red,” we need a further Form to explain what they share, generating an infinite regress. This self-criticism remains one of the most powerful objections to Platonic realism.

3. Aristotle — the philosopher of substance

Aristotle rejected Plato’s separate Forms while preserving the insight that things have natures. His key innovation is hylomorphism: every natural object is a compound of matter (hulê) and form (morphê). Aristotle’s four causes Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy provide a complete explanation of anything: the material cause (what it is made of), the formal cause (its structure or essence), the efficient cause (what produced it), and the final cause (its purpose or end). A house is explained by its bricks (material), its architectural plan (formal), the builder (efficient), and its function as shelter (final). His framework of potentiality (dynamis) and actuality (energeia) solved the Parmenidean puzzle: the acorn is not yet an oak, but it is potentially an oak. Change is the actualization of potential, not the emergence of being from non-being.

4. Thomas Aquinas — the distinction that changed everything

Aquinas made the most consequential innovation in medieval metaphysics: the real distinction between essence and existence. The essence of a thing is what it is; the existence of a thing is that it is. You can fully describe a phoenix — feathered, fire-born, reborn from ashes — without knowing whether any phoenix actually exists. In every creature, essence and existence are really distinct and composed together like potentiality and actuality.

This leads to Aquinas’s conception of God as Ipsum Esse Subsistens — subsistent being itself. God does not have existence; God is existence. All creatures participate in being; God is being without limitation. Aquinas’s Five Ways are cosmological arguments from motion, efficient causation, contingency, degrees of perfection, and teleology, each arguing that an essentially ordered chain of explanations must terminate in an ultimate explanatory principle.

5. René Descartes — the origin of the mind-body problem

Descartes’ method of systematic doubt led him to the one thing he could not doubt: “I think, therefore I am” (the cogito). From this he concluded that he is essentially a thinking thing (res cogitans), utterly distinct from his body (res extensa). The mind is non-spatial, indivisible, and characterized by consciousness; the body is spatial, divisible, and characterized by extension.

This substance dualism crystallized the mind-body problem. Princess Elisabeth of Bohemia delivered the devastating objection in 1643: if the mind has no spatial properties, it cannot make contact with physical objects, and causation seems to require contact. How then does your decision to raise your arm actually raise it? Descartes proposed the pineal gland as the point of interaction, but this merely relocates the mystery to a smaller spatial region. The interaction problem has haunted dualism ever since.

6. Baruch Spinoza — one substance, infinite attributes

Spinoza took Descartes’ definition of substance (that which depends on nothing else for its existence) and pushed it to its logical conclusion in his masterwork, the Ethics (1677), written in the geometric style of Euclid. If substance is truly independent, only one can exist — for if a second existed, it would need attributes, and the first (being God/Nature) already possesses all possible attributes. Therefore, there is exactly one substance: Deus sive Natura (God or Nature).

Everything we encounter is a mode — a modification of this one substance, like a wave is a modification of the ocean. Thought and Extension are not two substances but two attributes — two ways of conceiving the same reality. Mind and body are “one and the same thing, expressed two ways.” Spinoza dissolves the interaction problem by denying there are two things to interact. He also denies free will: “In the mind there is no absolute or free will; the mind is determined to will this or that by a cause, which is also determined by another, and so to infinity.” We believe ourselves free only because we are conscious of our volitions but ignorant of their causes — like a stone hurtling through the air that imagines it is flying of its own accord.

7. Gottfried Leibniz — monads, harmony, and sufficient reason

Leibniz populated reality with infinitely many simple, immaterial substances called monads — each one “windowless” (no causal interaction with any other), each possessing perception and appetition (internal drive), each reflecting the entire universe from its own unique perspective. Since monads cannot interact, the apparent synchronization between your mind and body is explained by pre-established harmony: God programmed every monad at creation to unfold in perfect coordination, like two clocks set by the same master clockmaker.

Leibniz’s Principle of Sufficient Reason (PSR) holds that nothing happens without a reason. This drives his cosmological argument: contingent beings require explanation outside themselves, and the chain of explanations terminates in a necessary being (God). His Identity of Indiscernibles holds that no two things can share all properties — there must always be an internal difference, or there would be no sufficient reason for their distinctness. Against Spinoza’s necessitarianism, Leibniz insisted that this is the best of all possible worlds — God chose it from infinitely many alternatives because it achieves the optimal balance of simplicity in laws and richness in phenomena.

8. David Hume — the great skeptic

Hume applied his empiricist methodology — every genuine idea must trace back to an impression of sensation or reflection — to demolish the concepts of substance and causation. We never perceive “substance” directly; we perceive bundles of impressions (colors, textures, sounds) and our imagination bundles them together. The self, too, is a “bundle of perceptions” with no enduring substrate.

His analysis of causation is even more consequential. We observe event A, then event B, repeatedly. We never observe a “necessary connection” between them — only temporal succession, spatial contiguity, and constant conjunction. The feeling of necessity comes from the mind’s habit: after repeated conjunctions, the mind develops a propensity to expect B upon perceiving A. Causation, as we experience it, is a projection of the mind onto the world, not a feature of the world itself. This analysis “awoke Kant from his dogmatic slumber” and underlies David Lewis’s “Humean supervenience” program two centuries later.

9. Immanuel Kant — the limits of metaphysics

Kant’s Copernican Revolution reversed the traditional picture: instead of asking how our minds conform to objects, he asked how objects conform to the conditions of our minds. The mind contributes the forms of intuition (space and time) and the categories of understanding (substance, causation, etc.) that structure all possible experience. Objects as we experience them — phenomena — are partly constituted by our cognitive apparatus. Objects as they are independently — noumena (things-in-themselves) — are forever beyond our knowledge.

This move simultaneously saves and limits metaphysics. The synthetic a priori — necessary, universal truths that are also informative (like “every event has a cause”) — is possible because these truths describe the conditions the mind imposes on experience. But traditional metaphysical claims about God, the soul, and the cosmos as a whole exceed these conditions. When reason tries to go beyond experience, it generates antinomies — equally valid arguments for contradictory conclusions (the world has a beginning / the world has no beginning). Kant’s project is to show that legitimate metaphysics is the investigation of the conditions of possible experience, not speculation about things-in-themselves.

10. G.W.F. Hegel — absolute idealism and the dialectic

Hegel rejected Kant’s inaccessible thing-in-itself as self-undermining: to posit a limit to knowledge is to go beyond it. For Hegel, whatever exists is in principle knowable, and reality in its totality is the self-development of Spirit (Geist) — a rational process through which the Absolute comes to full self-consciousness through history, art, religion, and philosophy.

Hegel’s dialectical method (often oversimplified as “thesis-antithesis-synthesis,” a formula he never actually used) works by showing that any concept, when fully thought through, reveals internal contradictions that drive it to its negation, which is then resolved in a higher unity that preserves and transcends both. The opening of his Science of Logic demonstrates: pure Being, the most abstract thought, is so indeterminate that it is indistinguishable from Nothing. Their identity-in-difference is Becoming — the first concrete concept. This pattern repeats throughout reality: each stage of consciousness, culture, and history encounters its own limitations and sublates them into richer, more self-aware forms.

11. W.V.O. Quine — ontological commitment and the return of metaphysics

After the logical positivists declared metaphysics meaningless, Quine brought it back — but on new terms. His criterion of ontological commitment says: look at your best scientific theory, formalize it in logic, and whatever must serve as values of the bound variables in true sentences is what you are committed to. “To be is to be the value of a bound variable.” If physics needs numbers, numbers exist.

Quine’s attack on the analytic-synthetic distinction in “Two Dogmas of Empiricism” (1951) was equally consequential. He argued that every attempt to define “analytic truth” (true by meaning alone) is circular, and that no sharp line separates truths of meaning from truths of fact. All beliefs form a web that faces experience as a whole; even logic and mathematics are in principle revisable. By demolishing Carnap’s distinction between internal questions (within a framework) and external questions (about frameworks), Quine showed that ontological questions are continuous with scientific ones — and thus legitimate.

12. David Lewis — the systematic metaphysician

Lewis built the most comprehensive metaphysical system of the twentieth century. His modal realism treats all possible worlds as concrete, real entities. His counterpart theory says you do not literally exist in other worlds; other worlds contain counterparts sufficiently similar to you. His Humean supervenience thesis holds that all there is to the world is “a vast mosaic of local matters of particular fact, just one little thing and then another” — fix the distribution of fundamental qualities at spacetime points, and everything else (laws, causation, chances, minds) supervenes.

His Best Systems Account of laws says laws are the generalizations that feature as axioms in the best systematization of all particular facts — the system that optimizes the balance of simplicity and informativeness. His counterfactual theory of causation analyzes “A caused B” as “if A had not occurred, B would not have occurred,” with truth conditions given by the closeness of possible worlds. Even philosophers who reject Lewis’s specific positions work within the framework he established. His influence on contemporary metaphysics is comparable to Aristotle’s influence on the medieval period.


V. MAJOR PROBLEM CLUSTERS

A. Ontology proper — what categories do we need?

The basic ontological question is what categories of being to recognize. Do we need substances, properties, relations, events, processes, sets, numbers, holes? Alexius Meinong notoriously argued for a “jungle” of non-existent objects with properties — the golden mountain is golden, the round square is round — to handle reference to things that do not exist. Russell swept this away with his theory of descriptions, and Ockham’s Razor (“do not multiply entities beyond necessity”) became the default methodological principle. Lewis usefully distinguished qualitative parsimony (fewer kinds of entities) from quantitative parsimony (fewer instances), arguing that only the former matters: if you accept one electron, accepting billions more costs nothing additional in theoretical kinds.

B. The mind-body problem — consciousness and its place in nature

The hard problem of consciousness, introduced by David Chalmers in 1995, asks: why is there something it is like to be conscious? We can explain how the brain processes information, discriminates stimuli, and controls behavior (the “easy problems”), but explaining why these processes are accompanied by subjective experience seems to require a different kind of explanation entirely.

The zombie argument crystallizes the issue. A philosophical zombie is physically identical to you — same brain, same behavior — but has no inner experience whatsoever. Chalmers argues: zombies are conceivable; what is conceivable is metaphysically possible; therefore a physically identical world without consciousness is possible; therefore consciousness is not necessitated by the physical; therefore physicalism is false. Physicalists resist by denying either the first or the second premise.

Mary’s Room (Frank Jackson, 1982) makes the point differently. Mary is a brilliant neuroscientist who has spent her entire life in a black-and-white room. She knows every physical fact about color vision — wavelengths, retinal stimulation, neural pathways — everything physics and neuroscience can teach. One day she leaves the room and sees a red tomato for the first time. Does she learn something new? If she does, there are facts not captured by physical information, and physicalism is false. Jackson himself later rejected the argument, noting that if qualia cause Mary’s “Wow!” reaction, they must be causally efficacious, which is inconsistent with the epiphenomenalism his argument seemed to support.

Panpsychism — the view that consciousness is fundamental and ubiquitous — avoids the hard problem by denying that consciousness needs to emerge from non-conscious matter. But it faces the combination problem: how do micro-experiences in individual particles combine into the unified consciousness you are experiencing right now?

C. Free will and determinism

Frankfurt cases (Harry Frankfurt, 1969) challenge the intuition that moral responsibility requires the ability to do otherwise. Imagine: Black has implanted a device in Jones’s brain that will force Jones to perform a specific action if Jones shows any sign of deciding otherwise. As it happens, Jones decides on his own to perform exactly that action. Black never intervenes. Jones could not have done otherwise (Black would have forced him), yet Jones seems fully morally responsible — he acted on his own reasons, with no external interference. If this is right, the Principle of Alternative Possibilities (“you’re only responsible if you could have done otherwise”) is false, and compatibilism gains ground: even in a deterministic universe where alternatives are impossible, responsibility survives if your actions flow from your own reasoning.

Galen Strawson’s Basic Argument cuts deeper. You do what you do because of the way you are. To be truly responsible for your actions, you must be responsible for the way you are. But to be responsible for the way you are, you must have made yourself that way — which requires a prior self, which requires an even prior self, and so on to infinity. Since no finite being can be the ultimate cause of itself (causa sui), no one can be truly morally responsible for anything. This argument works whether determinism is true or false, because even indeterministic events are not things you control.

D. Causation — how things bring about other things

Every theory of causation faces hard cases. Hume’s regularity theory (causation is constant conjunction) cannot distinguish genuine causes from accidental correlations — night constantly follows day, but day does not cause night. Lewis’s counterfactual theory handles most cases beautifully but stumbles on preemption (Suzy’s rock breaks the window, but Billy’s rock would have if hers hadn’t — does the window’s breaking depend on Suzy?) and overdetermination (two rocks simultaneously hit the window, each sufficient — neither is counterfactually necessary). Absences as causes — did your failure to water the plant cause it to die? — threaten to make causation trivially abundant, since infinitely many non-events (Napoleon’s not watering it, Caesar’s not watering it) satisfy the counterfactual test.

Process theories (Wesley Salmon, Phil Dowe) define causation as the transfer of conserved physical quantities (energy, momentum) along spatiotemporal processes. This handles preemption (we can trace the physical process from Suzy’s rock to the window) but cannot handle causation by absence (no physical process connects your not-watering to the plant’s death). James Woodward’s interventionist theory offers a pragmatic alternative: X causes Y if there is a possible intervention on X that would change Y while holding other variables fixed. This connects causation directly to experimental methodology and handles most problem cases but is arguably circular (interventions are themselves causal notions).

E. Time and space — the architecture of the world

Newton’s bucket argument supports absolute space: when a bucket of water rotates, the water’s surface becomes concave. This cannot be explained by the water’s motion relative to the bucket (since early in the rotation, the water moves relative to the bucket but is flat). Newton concluded the water is rotating relative to absolute space itself. Leibniz countered that space is nothing over and above the relations between objects, wielding the Principle of Sufficient Reason: if absolute space existed, a universe shifted three feet to the left would be a different world, but there could be no reason to prefer one over the other.

McTaggart’s argument (1908) that time is unreal remains influential. The A-series describes events as past, present, or future — properties that change. The B-series describes events only by “earlier than” and “later than” relations — which do not change. McTaggart argued that the B-series alone cannot constitute time (no genuine change), that the A-series is essential but contradictory (every event must be past, present, and future), and therefore time is unreal. A-theorists respond by taking tense as primitive; B-theorists accept that the A-series is unreal and insist the B-series suffices.

Time travel, analyzed by Lewis, is logically possible if we require consistent timelines. The time traveler can try to kill their grandfather but cannot succeed — because in fact they did not, and the past is already fixed. What happened, happened. This does not prevent free choice; it simply constrains the set of possible actions to those consistent with the actual history that includes the time traveler’s presence.

F. Identity and persistence — what makes something the same?

The Ship of Theseus becomes even more vexing with Thomas Hobbes’s addition. After every plank is replaced, someone reassembles the old planks into a second ship. Ship R (the continuously maintained replacement) and Ship A (the reassembled original material) both exist. Which is the Ship of Theseus? They cannot both be, since identity is transitive. If R = the original and A = the original, then R = A, which is absurd (they are distinct objects). You must choose between material continuity and spatiotemporal/functional continuity as your criterion.

Derek Parfit’s teleporter problem extends this to personal identity. A scanner records every atom in your body, destroys the original, and transmits the information to Mars, where a new body is constructed atom-for-atom. The Mars person has all your memories, personality, and the cut on your lip from shaving. Is the Mars person you? Parfit’s radical answer: the question is empty. Personal identity is not what matters in survival. What matters is Relation R — psychological continuity and connectedness, with any cause. This is preserved in teleportation, fission, and even gradual neural replacement. “When I believed [in a deep further fact about identity], I seemed imprisoned in myself… When I changed my view, the walls of my glass tunnel disappeared.”

G. Universals and abstract objects

The Quine-Putnam indispensability argument for mathematical objects is deceptively simple: we should believe in whatever our best scientific theories require; our best scientific theories require mathematics; therefore we should believe in mathematical objects. Hartry Field responded with fictionalism: mathematics is useful but literally false, and he attempted to reformulate physics without quantifying over mathematical objects. Paul Benacerraf’s dilemma shows the tension from another angle: a standard account of mathematical truth requires abstract objects, but a standard account of knowledge requires causal contact with the objects known, and abstract objects are causally inert. Mathematical Platonism gives you truth but not knowledge; nominalism gives you knowledge but not truth.

H. Modality — necessity, possibility, and Kripke’s revolution

Saul Kripke’s Naming and Necessity (1972/1980) transformed metaphysics by introducing rigid designators — names that designate the same object in every possible world. “Hesperus” and “Phosphorus” both rigidly designate Venus. Since identity is necessary (if a = b, then necessarily a = b), “Hesperus is Phosphorus” is necessarily true — yet it was an empirical discovery. This is a necessary a posteriori truth: metaphysically necessary but knowable only through experience. Similarly, “water is H₂O” is necessary (there is no possible world where water is a different substance) but a posteriori (chemistry had to discover it).

Kripke also defended origin essentialism: an object necessarily has the origin it actually has. This table could not have been made from a different block of wood; you could not have originated from a different sperm and egg. Essential properties are those without which a thing could not exist; accidental properties are those it happens to have but could have lacked.

I. Composition and material constitution — the statue and the clay

A sculptor shapes a lump of clay into a statue. Are the statue and the clay one object or two? They occupy exactly the same space, yet they seem to have different modal properties: the clay could survive being squashed flat, but the statue could not. If they differ in properties, Leibniz’s Law says they are not identical. But how can two distinct objects occupy the same space simultaneously?

Responses vary dramatically. Constitution theorists (Lynne Baker) say the statue is constituted by but not identical to the clay — constitution is not identity. Four-dimensionalists say the statue and the clay share temporal parts at the present but diverge at times where the clay exists but the statue does not. Eliminativists deny that one or both objects exist. Mereological nihilists say there are no composite objects at all — just simples arranged statue-wise and clay-wise.

J. Laws of nature — what governs the world?

The Humean account says laws are just regularities — patterns that happen to hold. The Armstrong-Dretske-Tooley account says laws are relations of necessitation between universals: it is a law that Fs are Gs because the universal F-ness stands in a necessitation relation N to the universal G-ness. Lewis’s Best Systems Account says laws are the axioms of the best systematization of all particular facts — the deductive system that achieves the optimal balance of simplicity and informational strength.

Dispositional essentialists (Alexander Bird, Brian Ellis) argue that properties have their causal roles essentially — charge essentially disposes an object to attract oppositely charged objects, and the laws of nature simply describe these essential dispositions. On this view, laws are metaphysically necessary, not contingent. This is a genuinely different picture from the Humean mosaic: where Humeans see patterns in a vast, inert mosaic, dispositionalists see a world of active powers whose behavior flows from their very natures.

K. Existence and being — the deepest questions

Is existence a property? Kant said no: “Being is obviously not a real predicate.” One hundred actual dollars contain not a penny more than one hundred merely possible dollars. In modern logic, “exists” is not a first-order predicate but a quantifier: “horses exist” means “there is at least one x such that x is a horse.” This is why the ontological argument — from Anselm’s claim that God is “that than which nothing greater can be conceived” to Descartes’ claim that existence is contained in the idea of a perfect being to Plantinga’s modal version — remains controversial. If existence is not a property, you cannot argue from “God has all perfections” to “God exists.”

Leibniz’s question — “Why is there something rather than nothing?” — admits no easy answer. The brute fact response says existence is simply a given, with no explanation. The necessary being response says some entity (God, or the universe itself) exists by necessity and explains everything else. The plenitude response says every possibility is realized, making “nothing” the only unexplained alternative. And some philosophers argue the question is malformed: “nothing” may not represent a genuine possible state of affairs.

L. The structure of reality — grounding, fundamentality, and natural kinds

Is there a fundamental level of reality? Foundationalism about grounding says yes: chains of metaphysical explanation terminate in basic, ungrounded facts (perhaps the facts of fundamental physics). Infinitism says no: explanation goes all the way down, with no bedrock. Jonathan Schaffer’s priority monism offers a third option: there is a fundamental level, but it is not the smallest things — it is the cosmos as a whole. Parts are grounded in the whole, not the other way around.

Do natural kinds carve reality at its joints? Kripke and Putnam argue that natural kind terms like “water” and “gold” are rigid designators — they pick out the same substance (H₂O, Au) in all possible worlds. If this is right, the internal structure of kinds is essential, not conventional. Social constructivists disagree, arguing that our category systems are shaped by human interests and could have been drawn differently. The debate over natural kinds has implications for biology (are species natural kinds?), chemistry (are elements?), and social science (are races? genders?).


VI. ADJACENT TERRITORIES

Metaphysics and philosophy of physics

Physics does not replace metaphysics — it constrains it. Special relativity challenges presentism by denying absolute simultaneity: if there is no frame-independent fact about which events are happening “now,” the presentist’s objective present seems to dissolve. General relativity makes spacetime a dynamical entity curved by mass-energy, raising the question of whether spacetime is a substance (substantivalism) or a system of relations (relationism). Quantum mechanics challenges the Identity of Indiscernibles (identical bosons share all intrinsic properties yet are arguably distinct), determinism (standard interpretations involve irreducible probability), and the nature of observation (does measurement create or merely reveal outcomes?).

Structural realism (James Ladyman, Steven French) argues that what science reveals about the world is structure, not the intrinsic nature of things. The epistemic version says we know only structure; the ontic version says structure is all there is. This is motivated by the observation that mathematical structures are preserved across scientific revolutions (Fresnel’s equations survive within Maxwell’s theory) even when the underlying ontology changes drastically.

Metaphysics and philosophy of mind

The mind-body problem is a metaphysical problem. Every position in philosophy of mind — dualism, physicalism, functionalism, panpsychism — is a metaphysical thesis about the nature of consciousness and its relation to the physical world. Kim’s exclusion argument ties metaphysics of causation directly to philosophy of mind: if the physical world is causally closed (every physical event has a sufficient physical cause) and mental properties are distinct from physical properties, then mental properties are either identical to physical ones (reductionism), causally excluded by them (epiphenomenalism), or somehow overdetermine them. Russellian monism attempts to bridge the gap by proposing that the intrinsic nature of physical properties — the nature that physics, which only describes structural/relational features, leaves out — is proto-experiential.

Metaphysics and philosophy of religion

Classical arguments for God’s existence are metaphysical arguments. The cosmological argument (in Aquinas’s, Leibniz’s, and modern versions) argues from the existence of contingent beings to a necessary ground. The ontological argument argues from the concept of a maximally great being to its existence. The fine-tuning argument argues from the improbable values of physical constants to a designer.
